JET Jams 10/11

This one is sort of special to me... Miss America 1994, Kimberly Aiken, representing for South Carolina! I definitely remember her win and how proud we, as South Carolinians, were that this 18 year old Black woman had won the title. She was the first Black woman to win the Miss South Carolina title and the fifth Black woman to win the title of Miss America. SALUTE!

JET's Top 20 Singles is one of my favorite magazine staples. I often go through old issues just to see what was dominating radio in any given week/month/year.

This week's Top 20 comes from October of 1993... Things were so different then. Both Living Single & Thea were just starting out on television, while Family Matters & The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air were in full swing! And speaking of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air...

I'm sure (or at least hopeful) that you all saw my Twitter thread on Maxine Daphne Reid. If not, head on over to Essence for a re-cap!

Let's see... what else was going on in October of 1993? Oh! All of this amazing music! Toni Braxton held down the #1 spot with the lead single from her debut album while Mariah Carey was #2 with Dreamlover. Male R&B groups were huge, as Jodeci, Intro, Silk, LeVert, Bel Viv Devoe, Tony Toni Tone, and II D Extreme all held places on this list. Not to worry... the ladies held their own! Two of my favorite groups, SWV & Zhane, made the cut as well.
